The following is a post I made on the highly recommended progressive website Common Dreams.

Locking Out the Voices of Dissent

One method of the surveillance state is to marginalize groups by labelling them with politically charged rhetorical attacks. The illusion that progressive political groups are dangerous and unpatriotic makes them easier targets to deny political access and justice. The media, as always, is an essential complicit partner in this process. One example that launched the ideologically driven corporate take-over of public education, was little Bush's Secretary of Education Ron Paige's description of the NEA as a "terrorist organization". The attacks against teachers and their right to organize have been ongoing and relentless ever since while the Federal usurpation of what students will learn in public schools is complete. Students are no longer are taught to think only to believe.
