       American Mythology
What is the American Dream?
Is it like Fess Parker at the Alamo,
The last man standing against hordes
Of Mexican cartels who seek to undermine
Our righteous creed as written by the founding father
Walt Disney who put a fresh coat of veneer
On America’s mythic narrative
For the quick profit; and John Wayne whose
Delusional grandeur postured like a Reaganesque statue
Memorializing the cognitive dissonance of meaningless martyrdom.
History as fable has delivered us to redundant evil
And I will pledge allegiance in a thicket of thorns and bony shards
That inoculate me against shame and reason to pray
That the ossified innocence of children desecrated by MTV
And Jersey Shore will find redemption in this April swampy shrine
Of golden marsh marigolds adorned by the dappled early morning sun
And a careless quilt of crumpled beer cans and Mclitter
